‘FLOWER FESTIVAL’ IS COMING TO OLDHAM TOWN CENTRE
Date published: 24 August 2011
Oldham Council is encouraging town centre visitors to get some flower power.
Saturday, September 3 will see the town centre host ‘Flower Festival 2011’, which completes the Borough’s ‘Bloom and Grow’ bid for this year
Run in conjunction with the Oldham Business Improvement District (BID), the event will feature a guest appearance by the BBC Gardeners’ World presenter, Joe Swift.
Joe will be appearing in the town centre at 12pm and 2pm to answer any gardening questions you may have.
Workers from the Council’s Parks & Streetscene Service will also be on hand giving flower arranging demonstrations and you will have the chance to win a floral display at the end of every session.
There will also be loads more give-aways and prizes on offer throughout the day.
The fun starts at 11am and continues until 3pm.
Councillor Jean Stretton, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, said:
“The floral displays in the town centre look fantastic, as they do every year, so I would encourage residents to come along, have a look and join in the fun.”
“I would also like to say thanks the BID for their continued support as they are an important partner in our drive to make the town centre a safer, cleaner and greener environment.”
The festival follows of from last year’s hugely successful Flower Day when members of BID handed out 1,000 flowers to shoppers to show appreciation for their custom, and the positive feedback they had given about floral displays in the town centre.
The BID is a private sector-led initiative in conjunction with Oldham Council and Greater Manchester Police. Member firms vote to collectively invest money in projects that will enhance the town centre and improve their trading environment – including marketing activities, events, street cleaning and security measures to tackle crime effectively.
