Sporting stars have brains and brawn

Olympic swimming hopeful Jessica Lloyd and Oldham Athletic starlet Joe Cooper celebrate their results at Saddleworth School

SPORTING dreams have come true for a group of young stars from Saddleworth School.
Energetic teens showed they not only excelled in their extra-curricular activities, they were among the best academically as they collected their GCSE results yesterday.

Wonder pupil Jessica Lloyd (16), from Diggle, has spent most of her time travelling the globe as a freestyle swimmer having just jetted back from the World Junior Championships in Peru.

Her sights are now set on the Olympic dream, with a high chance she will compete with the 100m team at the London games next year.

She notched up several top grades despite being up at 4am most days to train.

She said: “It’s the stuff dreams are made of to be in the running for the Olympics but it is hard work.

“I’ve been taking school lessons during my lunch break and revising on the way to and from training but it was all worth it.”

Elated pupils scored best ever results for the school with 72 per cent achieving five of more A*-C including English and maths in the year Patricia Cornish retires as head.

Scholarship

Footy-mad Joe Cooper (16) from Springhead is leaving to fulfil a lifelong aspiration with Oldham Athletic.

He’s secured a scholarship with the youth team as well as scoring 8.5 A* grades at GCSE level.

He said: “I did think of going to university but I couldn’t give up this fantastic chance to play football, I am so excited.”

Teens collected their exam results carrying backpacks and wearing wellies before hurrying off to the Leeds festival.
