Another record year!

North Chadderton School pupils are celebrating after helping the school achieve its best-ever GCSE results.

The record showing saw 66 per cent of pupils smash the key performance measure of five A* to C grades, including English and maths.

The figure is up by 15 per cent from last year, when the school again recorded a then-record high. The school’s top performing student was Ruksana Begum, who earned eight A*s and three As. She poured over her results alongside fellow star pupils Luke Barclay, who got five A*s, 4 As and a distinction in ICT, and Lily Newton, who scooped four A*s, four As, one B and an AS level in French.

Ruksana, of Amberley Walk, Chadderton, said: “I didn’t expect to do so well.”

She and her fellow classmates were hampered by building work at the school, which acting head teacher Fiona Jack said had put all pupils under “massive pressure.”

She said: “It is absolutely phenomenal, and a testament to the staff and the students who have all worked so hard.”

Ruksana, who is heading to college to study maths, history, biology, chemistry and psychology, ahead of a prospective career in dentistry, said: “We managed to work through it all.”

Luke, of Wetherby Drive, Royton, said he was nervous about seeing his results, and was surprised, delighted and proud to get a good grade in English — “not my strongest subject,” he said.

He did well in science subjects, and plans to take A-level biology, chemistry, physics and maths at North Chadderton Sixth Form, before pursuing a career in medicine or surgery.

Lilly, of Racefield Hamlet, Chadderton, plans to continue French at college and university, and although incredulous at the prospect of university fees which will have trippled, said it wouldn’t stop her going.

“I want the experience, and I will face the fees when it comes,” she said.

In total, 85 per cent of students gained 5 GCSE A*-Cs.
