Foster carers sought

A NEW fostering scheme is seeking people interested in providing overnight care for children with autism.

Oldham Council has launched an appeal for specialist carers to come forward to provide overnight breaks for up to eight children, one at a time on a rota basis, in their own home.

Councillor Hugh McDonald, Cabinet member for children and families, said: “Regular overnight breaks are an opportunity for a child to take time out from their day-to-day family life. It is also a chance for them to make new friends outside their family and to develop their independence.

“At the same time their families get a break from caring. Parents can spend time with other members of the family, including other children.”

Caring for children on the autistic spectrum can be demanding, so ideally carers will have some experience of caring or working with children or young people.

Experience of autism would also be an advantage but is not essential as all carers receive specialist training and support.

Carers will need a spare bedroom and be willing to undertake NVQ Level 3 in caring for children and young people.

All carers receive a comprehensive support package, including £24,438 per year, 27 days annual leave and a dedicated worker who will be there to offer ongoing advice and support.
