9/11 twin towers wreckage on show
Date published: 06 September 2011
A GIANT piece of steel from the wreckage of New York’s twin towers will be displayed in Manchester to mark the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attack on New York.
The 22ft shard will be one of the first pieces from Ground Zero ever to be seen in Britain. It will be displayed at the Imperial War Museum North.
From this weekend, display In The Spotlight will remember the historic events by also displaying a British Union flag pulled from the wreckage. The steel will be installed in October.
To mark the day itself, on which more 3,600 people lost their lives, the museum will team up with Wake Forest University in North Carolina for a transatlantic performance of two specially-composed pieces of music at 4pm on Sunday.
Each of the pieces, which incorporate voice recordings of witnesses of the attacks, will be beamed across the Atlantic by videolink.
