Sporty teens in running for Olympic glory

THE Olympic spirit will be alive and well this weekend as more than 1,000 youngsters compete in the ultimate village challenge.

Seven teams of teenagers will battle it out at the Saddleworth Village Olympics which get out of the starting blocks on Saturday.

Children will compete in events including the 100m sprint, long jump, relay race and distance throwing.

Netball, basketball, swimming, tennis and football will also be on the agenda during the sporting fortnight.

Committee member Steve Bradley said: “The main objective is to get youngsters into sport for life.

“It gives youngsters who aren’t on teams the chance to get stuck in and give it a go. Many people have such fond memories of the Olympics, it helps children get to know each other and there is a great camaraderie.”

A joyous opening ceremony will kick-start the 26th annual event with thousands of colourful balloons to be released and tasty Olympic cupcakes on offer.

The run-up has been a challenge for the committee, after several long-standing members dropped out.

But a new crop of volunteers have stepped up to the plate and dealt with hurdles in their way to organise the fun event.

With the uncertain status of Churchill playing fields, many of the events will be held in the grounds of Saddleworth School in Uppermill.

Steve added: “It’s a unique event and we are really looking forward to it. We’ve had to deal with Churchill fields being unavailable but we’ve tackled it and are just hoping for good weather.”
