OLDHAM fundraiser Ele Gibson packed a punch for Cancer Research UK by launching the charity’s breast cancer awareness and fundraising campaign.

“Join the fight for women’s survival” saw Ele don pink boxing gloves in a bid to get the public behind the cause by organising pink-themed fundraising events of their own.

Every year, around 140 women in Oldham are diagnosed with breast cancer.

Ele, the charity’s Oldham volunteer manager, said: “We are shaping up to recruit mums, dads, families, friends and work colleagues throughout Oldham to help raise money.

“We want them to step forward and be counted as they join the fight for women’s survival.

“The message to everyone is clear — Cancer Research UK needs you!”

Thanks to the generosity of its supporters, Cancer Research UK was able to spend more than £41million on groundbreaking work to combat breast cancer last year, making it the country’s largest single-funder of breast-cancer research.

Ele said: “So many women are alive today thanks to research into breast cancer.

“Cancer Research UK is behind many important drugs, such as tamoxifen and herceptin, which have saved thousands of lives. But research is expensive, — that’s why we need everyone in the region to help raise crucial funds.

“There are lots of ways to get involved, from holding a pink party to glamming up for work to organising a sponsored walk.”

The public can also help by buying a pink glitter ribbon badge or limited-edition rubber duck, designed by pop star and breast cancer survivor Anastacia, and comedian/presenter Paul O’Grady, from any Cancer Research UK shop,
