Howard gets the hump over defunct signs

MISLEADING road signs in Shaw have been driving Councillor Howard Sykes round the bend.

The sign warning of a roundabout on Beal Lane, outlived the obstacle for almost three months, while a “Humps for 80 yards” sign remained for six weeks after the speed-calming measures were removed as part of ongoing highway works.

But while the signs were finally taken down on Tuesday, four weeks after the project was signed-off, the lit columns still remain.

He said: “You can imagine my anger and sheer frustration that despite assurances, Shaw residents were faced with misleading highway signs all this time.

“I informed the council of the signs in July but they still remained after the re-opening of Beal Lane.

“If they couldn’t physically remove these signs, surely someone could have walked the route and blackened them out?

“Why have we still got a train barrier sign?

“The council needs to put some glasses on — or buy some — as they clearly don’t see what everyone else in this borough has to live with.”

Councillor Sykes, who objected to the traffic-calming measures 12 years ago, is demanding that signage is removed quickly when schemes are complete.

The removal of the speed humps is in response toa campaign by residents to reduce noise caused by heavy vehicles.

A council spokesman did not wish to comment, other than to say they had now removed the defunct signs.
