A NEW scheme is being launched to keep Oldham residents warm this winter after it was revealed that 265 people died in the borough last year because of cold homes.

Every Oldham resident who owns or privately rents their home will be entitled to free loft insulation, worth £700, regardless of their age or income to combat the toll — known as excess winter deaths.

Contributions of £60 will only be required if a top up is required for those homes which already have 60mm or more of insulation. Previously the scheme was only available to the over-70s or those in receipt of benefits.

Getting homes insulated helps residents save money by reducing their heating bills, helping to lift people out of fuel poverty.

Oldham council’s housing-energy officer Angela Carr, who gave a presentation to Shaw and Crompton Parish Council, said that 17 per cent of Shaw and 33 per cent of Crompton’s residents are currently in fuel poverty.

These residents often use extra blankets and wear more clothes, leading to isolation as they do not invite people round to their homes.

The target in Oldham is for 10,000 lofts to be filled within the first 12 months of a three-year programme.

Age Concern is also offering a loft cleaning scheme for older people who would be unable to clear their lofts to make way for the insulation.

To apply residents can book a referral on www.getmetoasty.com or call the freephone number 0800-512 012.

A surveyor will check the property, at no cost, for suitability.
