ONE of the country's highest war memorials will be easier to reach.
Council leader Jim McMahon announced plans to make the sky-high memorial on Pots and Pans in Saddleworth more accessible to people wanting to pay their respects to the fallen.
Constructed in 1923 and 1,200 feet above sea level, the memorial is sited so that it is visible from all Saddleworth's seven villages.
The access for the much lower Bardsley War Memorial, on Ashton Road will also get a much-needed facelift this financial year.
Councillor McMahon said: "There are a number of memorials across the borough where elements of upgrades have taken place over the years, but there are others that are in serious deterioration.
"It is very clear that if we want people to use these and to use them as place to pay their respects for those who lost their lives then at the very least they should be able to access them.
“Pots and Pans is probably the most extreme example, but one we need to start sooner rather than later."
Oldham town centre will also see substantial work to the war memorial — but will not begin until after this year's Remembrance Sunday.
