A grandfather of 12 has been wearing the stairs carpet out in his home in preparation for his latest challenge.

Serial fundraiser Roy Taylor has been driving his wife of 42 years crazy as he trains for one of the highest indoor walks in Britain.

The 66-year-old from Shaw has been climbing the stairs in his home for up to four hours a day.

Roy and his daughter, Debbie Morris (38) are taking on the 46 floors of Manchester’s tallest building, the Beetham Tower.

In aid of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust the pair will attempt to reach the top of the skyscraper with fellow fundraisers on Sunday.

Debbie (38), of Delamere Avenue, Shaw, said: “He is wearing the carpet out the number of times he has gone up and down those stairs!”

Nine years ago, Roy suffered a heart attack. He smoked more than 60 cigarettes a day and had an unhealthy diet. The attack gave retired Roy, of Beck Grove, a reality check: he changed his eating habits and stubbed out smoking.

Since then he has taken part in a number of challenges including the Greater Manchester Bupa Run and climbing Snowdon.

Every week he walks approximately 40 miles a week over the hills of Saddleworth and beyond with his daughter, who is also a keen fitness enthusiast.

Debbie, a foster carer, said: “I’m going along on this challenge, because if I don’t, he will run up. He thinks he his Peter Pan!”
