RSPCA praise for ‘flagship’ council

THE RSPCA has declared Oldham Council a flagship authority in its provision of animal health and welfare services.

The council became the first to secure three gold gongs at the charity’s annual Community Animal Welfare Footprints Awards.

It was also the inaugural gold winner of the Animal Welfare Principles Footprint — which recognises the council’s ethical food procedures and promotion of good practice in animal welfare.

This is the third year running the council has picked up RSPCA awards.

Judges highlighted how stray dogs are excellently dealt with, including educating owners to prevent straying.

Councillor Bernard Judge said: “This is excellent news. Local people have great affection for animals and are increasingly concerned about their welfare so it is important we recognise this and ensure we meet those concerns.”

And the medal haul didn’t stop there. Oldham Council were runners-up in the English Unitary Council Innovator category.

Judge Mike Radford said: “Local government continues to have an essential and unique role in protecting animals.

“The members and electors of the authorities represented here can be suitably proud of the quality of the work being undertaken on their behalf.”

Council representatives will receive the awards at a ceremony due to take place at the House of Lords later this year.
