A father-of-two who had worked around the world was knocked down and killed by a teenage driver in Abu Dhabi.

Oldham accountant Martyn Inman (52) was hit by a car in the Gulf state, where he had lived since 1988, an inquest heard yesterday.

Driver Abdul Aziz Ibrahim Yousef Ibrahim was convicted under Islamic Sharia law and ordered to pay “blood money” of 200,000 Dirhams — approximately £34,700 — to the family of the former Blue Coat School pupil.

The 18-year-old, who described the accident as an act of God, was also banned from driving for three months.

The inquest, in Oldham, heard that Mr Inman had worked al ove the worl for companies such as American Express and London merchant banks, before moving to Abu Dhabi to work for the government, settling there with his wife, Bev. The couple had two children, Charlotte and Christopher, who were 17 and 14 when their father was killed on February 12.

Mr Inman was crossing a road in the Marina Mall shopping area when he was hit by the teenager, who was driving his father’s car. He suffered head and rib injuries and died of internal bleeding and shock.

Mr Inman’s sister, Melody Richardson, described her brother as very kind, thoughtful and fun to be with.

Though he lived abroad, he spent his holidays in Oldham.

Deputy coroner Matthew Cox said: “It is difficult to know how these charges compare with road traffic charges in English law.”

He recorded a “narrative” verdict, that Mr Inman was crossing the road when a vehicle collided with him, causing fatal injuries.
