VOLUNTEERS who are organising a public event at Jubilee Nature Reserve in Shaw have faced an unpleasant challenge — tackling the fly-tipping and dog fouling that is taking place.

The group, which is completing a countryside skills course with Groundwork Oldham and Rochdale, is organising a community action day at the reserve, where families and the local community can find out more about its heritage and the area’s wildlife.

But fly-tipping and dog fouling have hampered the group’s preparations for the event.

Local residents and regular visitors have also voiced concerns about the anti-social activities.

Volunteer Anita Lamb said: “I am disgusted by the dog mess and tipping at the nature reserve.

“It’s such a beautiful place and a shame that a few lazy people feel the need to spoil it.”

Groundwork education manager Suzanne Walton was annoyed at the amount of cleaning up they have had to carry out this year.

She said: “It is very upsetting to see our hard work stained by the anti-social actions of a few individuals.”

The community action event is taking place on Wednesday between 12.30 and 2.30pm.

Activities include a guided walk around the nature trail, pond dipping and creating habitat boxes.

For more information on the event, or anyone wishing to support Groundwork, contact Suzanne Walton on 0161-624 1444.

Fly-tipping should be reported to Oldham Council.

A carpet which was dumped on playing fields ended up costing a Coppice man £400.

Sameer Zulqurnain, of Frederick Street, was prosecuted by Oldham Council for fly-tipping.

The 36-year-old paid a friend to remove a carpet from a property he rents out.

But a witness spotted the carpet being dumped at Snipe Clough and told the council.

Zulqurnain failed to ask if the person removing the carpet was a licensed waste carrier and had no transfer note to show who he had passed the waste to.

He pleaded guilty to a failure of care under the Environmental Protection Act and was fined £150 fine with £250 by Oldham magistrates.
