60 years of Polish parish
Date published: 29 September 2011
THE POLISH community of Oldham celebrated 60 years of successful ministry in the area.
The anniversary was marked with a special mass at St Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church, in Union Street.
Much of the community descends from Poles leaving their homeland and soldiers remaining in Britain following the Second World War.
In the wake of the war many Polish people sought refuge in Britain after the Soviet Union imposed a communist system on Poland.
The community quickly settled, establishing their own church and social club.
