DETERMINED youngsters from Oldham channelled all their energy into completing a mammoth swim for charity.
The 18 swimmers — including two teachers — from North Chadderton School completed 1,056 lengths of the pool at Oldham Sports Centre, the equivalent of swimming the English Channel. And they swam the 24.8 miles in just over an hour!
Two pupils came up with the plan to raise money for the Christie hospital. Both have grandparents being cared for by the hospital.
The school’s head of geography, Kathryn Rawlinson, said: “Everyone was really up for it; the problem was stopping them!
“It was a real challenge, but the group wanted to do something that would push them rather than a simple non-uniform day.
“We’d just like to say a big thank-you to the sports centre for letting us use the lanes free, and disrupting swimming lessons.”
The pupils, from years 8-13, each tackled between 50 and 100 lengths and have so far raised £800.
