A fine mess for construction firm
Date published: 30 September 2011
A CONSTRUCTION company which racked up a string of litter-clearing fines for failure to remove a “rubbish tip” has still not coughed up.
Oldham Council inspectors discovered an abundance of rubbish which included beds, washing machines and bin bags at land owned by Freshstart Construction Limited.
Near-by residents made complaints about the mess on Norman Street, Coldhurst, last November with council enforcement officers subsequently issuing a fixed-penalty notice.
The payment of £110, which would have reduced to £60 if paid within 10 days, was not paid by the Chadderton-based company. The firm failed to pay the notice and the council cleared up the land after a second notice — also not paid.
In May, magistrates ordered that the company pays a total of £995 including court costs and the council’s clearing costs.
Yesterday at Oldham Magistrates’ Court, the Middleton Road-based firm faced four charges of failing to comply with a litter-clearing notice.
In Freshstart Construction’s absence, the case proceeded and magistrates ordered the company to pay a further £850 fine with £550 costs.
