More big films at The Small Cinema
Date published: 11 October 2011
MOVIE lovers can look forward to more fantastic films at Gallery Oldham this autumn.
After four sell-out family film screenings over the summer, The Small Cinema returns with a new season of movies for both young and old.
From all-time classics of the silver screen to recent big-screen successes there is something for all the family to enjoy.
The autumn season kicks off on Thursday at 7pm with” West is West” — the sequel to the hit comedy “East is East” — an entertaining coming of age story showing as part of national Black and Asian History month celebrations.
Children can celebrate the start of the half-term holiday on Tuesday, October 25, at 2pm with the colourful animation “Rio”, this year’s big hit from the makers of “Ice Age”.
There’s also plenty of Hallowe’en thrills and chills for all the family with Disney’s spooky comedy “Hocus Pocus” on Sunday, October 30, at 2pm.
Children also receive a free goodie bag at both of these half-term films and they can get creative with free movie-related arts and crafts activities from noon until 2pm.
There’s a wild ride down the road to matrimony with the raucously funny and heartfelt female comedy “Bridesmaids” on Thursday, November 17, at 7pm.
And tickets are also available now for two Christmas classics, “It’s a Wonderful Life” and “The Polar Express”, showing in December.
The community cinema is the brainchild of teenager Sophie Barrott, from Royton, who decided to do something positive to help bring cinema back to Oldham last year.
Oldham Council’s Arts Development team is supporting Sophie to enable regular screenings at the 80-seater Performance Space in the Gallery Oldham/Oldham Library and Lifelong Learning Centre building.
Councillor Hugh McDonald, Cabinet member for children, young people, families and culture, said: “The Small Cinema continues to go from strength to strength and it is great to see such a range of films on offer for all the family until the end of the year.”
Sophie, a former pupil at Oldham Sixth Form College who is now studying film at Manchester Metropolitan University, added: “We hope our new season offers something for everyone to enjoy as we continue to bring cinema back to Oldham.”
Tickets for all films cost £3 — with everyone having the chance to win a copy of the film to take home on DVD at all screenings.
Advance booking is available from Gallery Oldham, Greaves Street, Oldham, or by calling 0161-770 4653.
