Pool threat is cue for a battle

BATTLE-LINES have been drawn in the fight to save Crompton swimming pool.

Councillors voted unanimously to oppose and actively campaign against the closure of the pool in Shaw as well as write to Oldham Council demanding it is put back on the redevelopment list.

Councillors spoke out in a heated open forum after more than 50 people had gathered to have their say.

Residents got a chance to speak, after being prevented from doing so at the meeting of Royton, Shaw and Crompton District Partnership last week.

Resident Alan Nield said: “Shaw has died — it is full of large industry or takeaways. We want to keep this facility where we can spend our leisure time.

“Shaw once again is missing out.”

The residents were there to oppose plans, currently in consultation, that could see Oldham sports centre revamped and Crompton and Royton pools closed to be replaced by a new leisure centre in Royton centre.

Concerns were also voiced about people having to travel to Royton, disabled access to facilities, lack of services and potential costs.

Councillor Rod Blythe raised worries about residents in Royton and Shaw sharing one new facility.

He said: “No matter how big you make the pools, with only the one it is going to mean less pool time.

“How will all the schools and clubs use one pool? The public will get squeezed out.”

Councillor Mark Alcock said he was baffled that pool closures were being considered as Britain readies to host the Olympics next year and that Shaw was being neglected again after plans for a new health centre had also been cancelled.

Residents handed out contact sheets during the meeting to establish an action group before the proposals are considered by cabinet in December.

The issue is set to dominate the next PACT meeting at St Paul’s Methodist Church on Wednesday, October 26.
