NEW generation: Clinton “Rocky” Steele
WRESTLER Tommy Bailey was a man of real steel and entertainment.
The ultra-fit sportsman from Oldham wowed thousands throughout the country and more importantly in his hometown in the 60s and 70s.
He was a fans’ favourite as he grappled many an opponent into submission at the popular Queen Elizabeth Hall.
Oldham’s premier venue has not seen the wrestling ring for almost a decade and it’s much longer since the legendary likes of Big Daddy, Giant Haystacks, Jake “The Snake” Roberts and The British Bulldog, Davey Boy Smith were on the bill.
This weekend the razzmatazz of the electrifying sport returns and one Oldham grappler is following in his grandfather Tommy’s footsteps.
Clinton “Rocky” Steele (31) is itching to get in the ring for his home debut and bring a blockbuster performance to local supporters on a night that means so much to himself and his family.
He said: “My grandad was a quiet man, but I would watch countless wrestling matches with him when I was child.
“When he was in the ring he was far from quiet and was a very popular wrestler, one of the good guys.
“I have been a wrestler for a number of years, but never in Oldham and it will be nice to wrestle in my hometown for the first time.”
Tommy, who died at the age of 79, was a man whose characteristics were similar to the ones shown in the hit film “Rocky”, played by Sylvester Stallone.
According to his peers, Tommy had amazing stamina resulting from training on his bicycle.
For the best part of 30 years, he cycled from his home in Oldham around to different venues.
On one occasion Tommy, known as “Rough-House”, cycled a 60-mile round trip to Barnsley.
Now two generations on, Tommy’s characteristics can be seen in Clinton — a Moorside fighter, who has performed all over the country for the past seven years.
Clinton said he will be charged-up come Saturday night. “The shows are usually well attended and you get a real buzz.”
Ian McGregor, former wrestler and promoter who has kept the heart of wrestling beating in these parts and all over the world, is the man behind the show.
American Wrestling will host rip-roaring bouts on the night, including Clinton’s bout, a tag-team fight, a ladies match and the classic Royal Rumble contest.
The Ashton promoter (45), who appeared on the nostalgic ITV’s “World of Sport”, said: “It’s been a long time since wrestling has been in Oldham and we are glad, like many local wrestling fans will be, that it’s back in the town.
“Wrestling in Oldham is steeped in history.
“It’s a great night out for all the family plus they can also come and see Clinton in action.”
The action starts at 7.30pm and tickets are available from the box office, or by calling 0161-770 4083.
