Tory club sold
Date published: 12 October 2011
THE sale of Oldham’s former Conservative Club could be completed within weeks.
Ryder and Dutton managed to secure a buyer for the historic building in Union Street during an auction.
“Sold” signs have now been erected outside the building and the deal must be finalised before Tuesday, October 25.
The current property was built in 1911 but the site housed a Conservative Club since 1874 — where Sir Winston Churchill famously made a speech from the balcony.
Dwindling membership forced the club to close in 1996 and the building was last used as the Taj Mahal, an Indian restaurant.
