Parking initiative aims to give town a competitive edge —council leader
COUNCIL chiefs are urging shoppers to take advantage of free town-centre parking, which starts tomorrow.
All 12 town centre council-owned car parks will be free for the first three hours on Saturdays, to boost trade, until January 14.
Shoppers who want to stay even longer can park free all-day on Saturday at Hobson Street multi-storey, off Union Street.
Oldham Council leader Councillor Jim McMahon said: “We’ve already had some really positive feedback. We’re launching this scheme very early. It will make the shopping experience easier and cheaper, and we are urging residents to take regular advantage of this. We need local people to join us in making this a success. Please support your town-centre economy and shop local whenever possible.”
The scheme will cost the council around £78,000 in lost fees, and is backed by a range of family shopping events and attractions in the run-up to Christmas — starting with the traditional Reindeer Parade on November 12.
