‘Garish’ bank signs have gone —for now

THE window-covering signs have now been removed from the old bank building.
CONTROVERSIAL “garish” signs at Royton’s new Cash Generator store have been removed — but they could make a comeback.
The company was told it faced legal proceedings unless it removed the adverts, which were erected without permission.
A retrospective application has now been made to Oldham Council for the eight signs over the windows of the former Barclays Bank in Rochdale Road.
Two illuminated signs under the parapet roof, and an illuminated projecting sign have already been granted permission.
Councillors had been inundated with complaints about the “grotesque and garish” window signs.
Royton North councillor Bernard Judge is pleased that have been taken down and added: “It is not acceptable to have them on an architecturally important building. People are saying that they are garish. They are just inappropriate for the building.”
