A new venue for the whole community

TRANSFORMING a derelict school building in Higginshaw into a community venue has proved hugely popular.
Higginshaw Rugby Club created the Higginshaw Community Project (HCP) to boost the deprived area through the renovation of the former St Stephen’s School.
Volunteers helped clear and refurbish the building, while property services specialist Styles&Wood chose the scheme as part of its annual Big Challenge to donate £100,000 in labour and material costs.
The aim was to create a venue for community groups as well as provide employment opportunities, with plans drawn up for it to include a gymnasium, fitness centre, sports hall, changing rooms, toilet facilities and a bar.
Work on the building — completed in only two weeks — has included replacing toilets, installing new heating, electrical and alarm systems, new fire doors throughout, replacing the floor of the large hall and installing underfloor heating, fully insulating the room, and new lighting and redecoration.
Groundwork Oldham & Rochdale also created an attractive garden featuring seated areas, a pathway, wall art and planters.
Organisers have been inundated with bookings from groups eager to use the new facilities.
Treasurer Darryl Mclean said: “It has been praised by the Higginshaw residents for brightening up the local community.
“And the room has been fully utilised by a number of organisations, focus groups and sports clubs, including our own rugby teams.
“Having this great facility at our disposal has allowed us to reach out to the wider Oldham community.
“Our plans for the future are big. All funds raised from the teams, monies charged for the hire of the hall, donations and sponsorship received and grants awarded will go towards the future development of the charity, the facilities we provide and ultimately to add value to the local community.”
An opening dinner is this Friday (7.30pm), featuring a comedian, guest speaker, music and action with tickets costing £25 (£250 for a table for ten). Details from Mr Mclean on 07912 940 912.
