THIS way up, no this way. . . the upside down sign in Chadderton
Upside down sign blunder gives district a new look
RESIDENTS were quick to alert Oldham Council to its major blunder with a new sign in Chadderton.
The new “Welcome to Chadderton” sign was erected on Tuesday by workmen in Lees Street, near the JW Lees brewery, but some people couldn’t believe their eyes when they saw it had been put up upside down. The hiccup was hastily rectified.
Chronicle reader Andrew Robinson said the sign was left like that overnight: “I couldn’t believe it when I saw the workmen packing up after replacing the sign with a new one upside down,” he said.
“I checked again on Wednesday morning and took some photographs because I thought I’d either dreamed it or can’t have seen it properly, but no. I really can’t believe the level of incompetence shown by Oldham Council, and find the tag line “working for a co-operative borough” ironic.
“How hard is it to put up a sign?”
An Oldham Council spokesman said: “A genuine error was made by staff. We were notified by the public yesterday and it was rectified within an hour.”
