Chapel all set for Sunday film worship

DIMMED lights and a booming sound system will help transform an Oldham chapel into a cinema for the first time this weekend.

Members of Oldham Unitarian Chapel have invested thousands of pounds into turning their chapel into a cinema for local filmgoers.

The One World Cinema Club will screen its first film on Sunday from 2pm — and once a month thereafter.

A projector and sound system bring the movie theatre feel to the King Street chapel during the screening of “Time of our Lives” — a funny and touching story about three 100-year-old women.

The Rev Bob Pounder came up with the plan to bring thought-provoking films to Oldham.

He said: “We really hope people will like the idea. So many people are re-evaluating their lives at the moment, these films are more about humanity and life rather than bling and celebrity.”

The club will screen a comedy about the world’s financial systems next month and a hard-hitting movie about global warming in December.

Bob added: “We aim to make a positive contribution to life in Oldham and that’s what we hope this will do. These are the sorts of films screened at the Cornerhouse in Manchester so there’s a market.”

Entry to the show is a minimum donation of £3, and tea and coffee will be served after the screening. Free parking for customers will also be available. For more information visit www.oldhamunitarians.org.uk.
