An Oldham table tennis prodigy is becoming an internet smash hit — at the age of seven.

Amir Hussain, who can barely see over the table, recently made a huge impression in China, where the sport’s elite play.

The young starlet can be seen online competing in amazing fashion against his own Chinese professional coach, who officially trains the Scottish national side.

Local players are hailing the talented youngster from Clarksfield as a star of the future: he has already won several tournaments and matches at Under-11 level.

Dad Khamal (38) introduced his son to the game at the age of five, and last year took him to the Far East to play with the world’s best for two weeks.

He said: “We have only just unleashed him this year into matches — and he keeps on winning.

“He practises really hard and his coach, Victor Shi Guang comes from Glasgow once-a-week to train him.

“The rest of the week Victor plays professionally in France and also trains the Scottish national side.

“Amir is currently doing all the shots, mastering the backhand and forehand drives. The key is to keep practising, which we realised when we went to China. The children over there train for about six hours a day.

“I am hoping to take him again pretty soon. More importantly, Amir is enjoying himself and enjoying his matches.”

Now the Clarksfield Primary School pupil is set to make his debut in the Oldham Table Tennis league for Hollinwood Table Tennis Club.

His father is a current member of the reigning league champions Glodwick Academy and has previously played for Lancashire.

Amir has already represented Manchester in the National Schools Tournament against children much older than him and represented Oldham in the Lancashire and Cheshire League last weekend where he won six games.

Joe Redikin, league match secretary, said: “You have to see Amir to believe what he can do. He is amazing.”
