A FRIEND’S heartbreak has inspired an Oldham woman to put the wheels in motion for poorly youngsters.
Leila Hughes is staging a sponsored pram-push and walk in Alexandra Park to raise money for Manchester Children’s Hospital after a friend’s baby was still-born and her twin daughter left seriously ill.
Claire Holroyd’s baby, Corrie, was stillborn at Wythenshawe Hospital when she went into labour at 25 weeks in September, 2010. Her twin, Kaycee, is still in hospital battling respiratory problems.
Leila, who has a 22-month-old son, Leighvan, and is expecting her second child, said seeing the struggle Claire, from Royton, and her family are facing has made her want to do her bit.
“I just wanted to raise some money to help because I know what Claire and her family are going through,” said Leila, of Belgrave Road. “When you have your own children it makes you think. If they get ill you want the best possible care for them.”
The facility at Manchester Royal Infirmary is the largest children’s hospital in the country.
Leila is hoping to get around 40 pram-pushers for her charity event on Sunday, December 4 and raise £2,000. There will be a raffle and refreshments on the day, and Leila is appealing to anyone who can donate towards either.
She currently has a pair of Lancashire Cricket Club tickets, scuba-diving lessons and a beauty-salon voucher up for grabs.
