ROYTON police have a new addition to their team — a camcorder to capture anti-social behaviour.

Councillor Diane Williamson decided to donate £500 of her annual council budget to buy a third device after reading how they were being put to good use in the Chronicle.

The Royton and Shaw neighbourhood policing team have been using the cameras to catch criminal ringleaders red-handed and have already used them to highlight the bad behaviour of youngsters to their parents.

PC Adam Murphy said the camera would be used in Royton Park to combat problems with bullying, drinking and drug-dealing.

He said: “We are clamping down on the problems but recently there have been an increased number of visits to the area from troublemakers coming over from Chadderton and the St Mary’s estate.

“We don’t want it to be a no-go zone for young people — we want them to tell us what is going on so we can continue to take positive action.”

Councillor Williamson said she thought there were a few dimly-lit areas where the camera would come to good use and praised the police for their work in using the other cameras so far.
