Tenants see an upside in downsizing success

An OLDHAM housing scheme in that encourages people living in large family homes to downsize has clocked up its 200th success.

Only London has supported a larger number of people in moves that help families to find a suitably spacious property — and older people to benefit from smaller accommodation.

Oldham Council works with a range of housing associations, including First Choice Homes Oldham (FCHO), and in partnership with Oldham Housing Investment Partnership (OHIP) to identify people who wish to look for smaller, easier-to-run and often cheaper homes.

The 200th householder to benefit from the award-winning incentive scheme is Norma Warden, who has moved from a three-bedroom house in Derker owned by FCHO to a one-bedroom flat in the same area, managed by Guinness Northern Counties. The 69-year-old said the move was the best thing she had ever done.

Councillor Dave Hibbert, Cabinet member for housing, transport and regeneration, said: “I’m happy Norma has taken advantage of the downsizing scheme and that she is made up with her move. There are many benefits to downsizing, not least the savings that can be made in terms of running costs and we would like to encourage people to consider a smaller home. But I must emphasise that any moves will be by choice only.”

Anyone who takes part in the scheme will be offered support by the council’s downsizing officer, and housing associations offer financial support to qualifying households.

Households living in a council or a housing association property who are interested in the scheme should call 0161-770 4766 for more information. Private tenants and owner-occupiers can get general advice on options on 0800-328 7788, but aren’t eligible for incentives.
