Hospice fears Health Lotto cash drain

FUNDRAISING chiefs at Dr Kershaw’s are warning that the new Health Lottery could deal a crushing blow to the hospice.
The hospice is already struggling to bring in the massive £1.3 million it must raise every year just to keep its doors open.
It runs its own weekly lottery to help boost funds, and fears supporters may switch to the national Health Lottery and leave the hospice in danger of failing to hit its target. And that could lead to local people with life-threatening illnesses being deprived of the vital care services.
Joanne Penketh, Dr Kershaw’s lottery manager said: “Our weekly hospice lottery is an essential source of income. We are extremely concerned that the new Health Lottery could divert significant amounts of money away from local hospice care, which is the last thing we need in this difficult economic climate.”
She warned: “Playing the Health Lottery might sound like a good idea for those who wish to support good causes, but the fact is it will only donate 20p to charity for every £1 spent on tickets – just a fraction above the minimum amount required by law.
“And because it’s a national initiative, players can never be sure exactly who they will be supporting with the money they give to the Health Lottery.
“For every £1 received by Dr Kershaw’s Hospice Lottery, 60-80 per cent goes directly towards hospice care for the people of Oldham and the surrounding area.”
Lisa Pearson, Dr Kershaw’s appeals manager, added: “We are desperate for money. I know times are difficult, but we are really feeling a downturn in donations which is risky for the hospice and for the future of the care the hospice provides.”
Taking part in Dr. Kershaw’s Hospice Lottery costs £1 a week. First prize is £1,000, and five runners up receive £50.
