Heated debate over baths site

ANGRY locals pushed for sites in Shaw to be considered for the council’s proposed new sports centre last night.

Residents slammed current plans to close both Crompton Pool and Royton Sports Centre and to replace them with one facility at either Royton Assembly Hall, Royton and Crompton School or in Royton town centre.

Speaking at a packed Shaw PACT meeting, project manager Cath Inchbold said it was not feasible for both baths — which are over 100-years-old — to remain open as they lost a combined total of £161,000 in 2009/10. She also claimed they had serious electrical system issues and needed repairs which would cost more than £403,000.

Criticism was directed at Ms Inchbold when she added that she was never asked by the previous or current administration to consider Shaw venues in the proposals.

Councillor Phil Harrison said he knew that both pools had five years of life left back in 2006 and that “to spend money on these two pools would be ridiculous.”

Ms Inchbold came under fire again over council literature stating that independent advisers and Sport England had been working with the council to review the existing facilities.

Shaw user group chairman John Irlam said: “Sport England have not been consulted. I have spoken with them and their recommendation is that you have to consult with the ASA (Amateur Swimming Association) — that’s not happened. The figures you quote in your report are misleading, There’s been a lot of cherry-picking.”

Ms Inchbold said: “The savings made by closing both baths and the cash from the sale of the sites will be re-invested to provide an excellent new facility.”

Locals suggested the consultation was a waste of time as it looked as though it was too late to consider Shaw, but they were told the period could not be extended as the leisure contract was due to expire. Residents have until November 22 to voice any concerns.
