Youth nuisance under control

A CRACKDOWN on anti-social behaviour in Failsworth has been declared a success.
Earlier this month, nuisance crime around the Tesco site was escalating into a serious problem but trouble has fallen dramatically thanks to the work of Oldham Council and its partners.
Work was carried out including the removal of excess trollies, increased security staff provision, plus police patrols — many equipped with “bodycams” — mini-cameras which enable filming to be carried out on anyone causing a nuisance — and improved lighting to the area.
Formal warnings have been issued and individuals banned from entering both the Tesco store and the car park.
Staff have also visited schools to communicate the implications of being involved in anti-social behaviour.
A recent spate of youths throwing eggs at traffic has also been dealt with successfully thanks to a quick response.
Councillor Jean Stretton, Oldham Council’s Cabinet member for neighbourhoods, said: “When it became clear that eggs were being thrown at vehicles in the area it was agreed between partners, including the stores, that sales of eggs to young people would be monitored and refused if necessary as a preventative measure.
“Since the joint-working commenced, there has been a huge reduction in the reports of anti-social behaviour and criminality.
“On the back of this success, Tesco intend to replicate the work we have done in other areas where such problems occur. I am delighted that by working in partnership we have been successful in addressing the issue and that Tesco, as a commercial partner, has been fully involved and committed to the process.”
Mike Norbury, Failsworth Tesco customer services manager, added: “Customer complaints have now reduced to virtually zero in contrast to times when customers turned away because they physically couldn’t enter the store due to youths blocking the entrance.
“I feel confident that we are able to sustain the safe-place-to-work-and-shop policy that we pride ourselves in as a responsible employer.
“We all appreciate the help and support given by all the agencies and local people.”
