Give a dog a home
Date published: 02 November 2011
LAST year more than 120,000 dogs were abandoned in the UK and the numbers being put down are at an 11-year high.
Now the Pedigree Adoption Drive has teamed up with Manchester Dogs’ Home to help find loving families for some of the homeless canines.
Now in its fourth year, rescue centres across the UK have already received £1 million from the campaign to save thousands of dogs, including £10,000 towards a micro-chipping scheme at Manchester Dogs’ Home.
Here are some of the cute canines at the home who are looking for a new owner.
Babe:
Loyal and sweet Babe (6) is a female lurcher looking for a fairly active home with no cats. She’s great with other dogs but has a real problem with felines and mustn’t be allowed near them. Babe loves long walks, trips to the beach and being fussed.
Blue:
Blue is a five-month-old male border collie who is a very active and inquisitive boy. Blue will really flourish in the right home, but he needs owner(s) with experience of very active dogs or dog sports. Due to his breed and temperament he needs a working home where he’s the only dog in the house and where there are no cats or children under 16.
Robert:
Staffie veteran Robert (10) is neutered but best suited to a home where he will be the only dog. The volunteers at the home say he’s a pleasure to walk thanks to his friendly nature and outgoing disposition. He also loves trips in the car. Robert is available for fostering as well as adoption.
Saracen:
Saracen is a nine-year-old German shepherd and rottweiler cross who needs a very special caring and loving home as he was sadly very neglected by his previous owners.
Saracen arrived at the dogs’ home weighing only 14 kilos, when he should have weighed around 30 kilos.
He does display some anxious behaviour, only natural given his background of neglect. Saracen’s new owners will need some patience to work through the anxious behaviour with him, and he also needs some basic training as part of his new start in life.
Sheba:
Gentle Sheba, a four-year-old border collie, was found stray in early October. Described as loveable and very friendly by Dogs’ Home staff and volunteers, Sheba loves going for walks and gets on well with other dogs. Being a typical border collie and very mentally alert, she is very unsuited to being in kennels and needs a loving home urgently. A lot of the dogs who come through our doors cope OK with kennels life for a while, as they’re so well looked after and walked as much as possible by our staff and volunteers. Some breeds such as border collies do tend to suffer anxiety here more than other dogs, and in those cases, such as Sheba who is featured here, it becomes urgent to find them a good home as soon as possible.
Tippy:
Loveable scruff Tippy, who has just turned seven, is a female cross-breed who is very good with children and with other dogs. She was found stray during the Summer, and has since been fostered by a Dogs’ Home member of staff who describes her as “a pleasure to walk, house-trained and with a friendly, outgoing disposition.” Tippy loves cuddles and treats and is very well-behaved. She loves the company of people but really doesn’t like being left on her own. She is also available for fostering.
