A MOTORIST has been killed in a freak accident on a moorland road.
The driver had lost control of his Nissan Micra at a notorious accident blackspot in Saddleworth and crashed into a field.
But as he climbed free from the vehicle he walked back on to the A62 Huddersfield Road and was hit by a Volkswagen Passat.
The accident happened close to the Floating Light pub in Diggle just after noon yesterday.
The identity of the victim, who is from the Oldham area and in his 40s, has not yet been released as officers attempt to trace his relatives.
The Passat driver, who was not injured, has not been named.
It is believed the victim had veered off the hillside pass and across the road into railings as he was driving towards Oldham.
The Passat was Huddersfield-bound and struck him moments later.
The man was taken to hospital but pronounced dead a short time later.
The road was partially closed for a number of hours while emergency services dealt with the incident.
One resident who lives yards from the scene, said: “It is a notorious road and has been for many years.”
Witnesses are asked to call police on 0161-856 8473, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
A MOTORCYCLIST was killed in a collision with a car in Wakefield Road, Stalybridge yesterday tea-time. The unnamed victim is said to be in his 30s.
