A TEENAGE driver remains in police custody following a horror crash in which a 17-year-old passenger died.
The 18-year-old motorist, arrested on suspicion of death by dangerous driving, continues to be questioned by officers after the Peugeot 307 he was driving collided with a telegraph pole in Saddleworth yesterday morning.
Police were called to Range Lane, Denshaw, shortly after 2.30am. The 17-year-old passenger was taken to hospital for treatment to a serious head injury, but died a short time later. His identity has not yet been released.
Three other occupants were taken to hospital for treatment to minor injuries.
Sergeant Lee Westhead, from the Road Policing Unit, said: “My team is working hard to establish the events surrounding this tragic loss of a young life and officers are supporting the teenager’s family.
“I urge anyone who was in the area or has any information, to come forward and speak to us.”
The A640 Huddersfield Road remained closed near Denshaw crossroads for several hours and reopened yesterday afternoon. It was initially believed that two cars were involved in the accident. Officers no longer believe that was the case.
Anyone with information should call police on 0161-856 8473 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
