POPULAR Oldham businessman and hair stylist Andrew Batterton has lost his brave fight against cancer. He was 58.
Mr Batterton was the co-founder of the town-centre Mario’s Hair Design in Manchester Street, where he worked for 37 years.
A father of two daughters, he had a kidney removed in February, last year, after developing a tumour.
His wife of two years, Lynn, said: “We thought that would be it and he would be alright, but he had a scan later which showed it had travelled to his lungs.”
Mr Batterton, who lived in Greenfield, was treated at The Christie Hospital. He threw open the doors at Mario’s to raise money for the hospital last Christmas.
He offered mince pies, mulled wine and a festive raffle, and raised in the region of £1,500 for the cause.
Mr Batterton was a keen golfer, and a captain at Prestwich Golf Club in 2006-07.
Mrs Batterton said: “Golfing was his life, he loved it.”
He ran a number of marathons, including the London Marathon, some half-marathons, and completed a daring sponsored parachute jump, which raised £600 for the former Hill Top School, Strinesdale.
“He was a very athletic person,” added Mrs Batterton. “He was a lovely man. You couldn’t wish to meet a nicer person. He was generous and funny and known for his jokes of the day.
“He always had a friendly smile and he will be missed by a lot of people.”
A book of condolence has been opened at Mario’s.
Customers have been invited to write a message in his memory.
A funeral service will be held tomorrow at Our Lady of Dolours (Servite) Church, Salford, at 11am, followed by internment at St Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, Moston.
