MOVING forward . . . the future looks bright for the Castleshaw Roman Fort
Roman fort set to go XXIst century hi-tech
THE ancient Castleshaw Roman fort is moving into the 21st century. Downloadable audio tours, online forums and a website will be a few of the elements brought in as the monument joins the digital age.
Northern Archaeological Associates have been working with the Castleshaw Working Party (CWP) on the preparation of a conservation management plan.
Due to the site’s exposed location on the slopes of the Castleshaw valley, there are fears the auxiliary fort could fall victim to a mixture of natural erosion and problems like vandalism and litter.
The plan will look at the implementation of a website, activities programmes, a touring exhibition and improving onsite experience.
Archaeologists say new areas could be unlocked by a community-based excavation programme.
Penny Middleton of Northern Archaeology said: “All these elements are currently under discussion. A number are dependent on funding, nevertheless we are hopeful that over the next few years there will be exciting things in store for the Castleshaw forts.”
It is believed the site may have been the focus of human activity thousands of years before the Romans ever set foot in Britain.
A draft plan is now available to view online for public review until Friday at www.naa.gb.com.
