People affected by macular degeneration — which affects the eye’s central vision — can now receive help and advice in Oldham.
Sufferers find everyday tasks such as reading, watching television and even distinguishing faces very difficult. The condition is the biggest UK cause of sight loss.
Phoebe Mercer from Oldham was diagnosed with the condition three years ago and believes the group will provide vital support. She said: “We can help each other with information on equipment and services available. You can’t really appreciate the emotional and practical problems having macular disease causes until it happens to you.”
The Macular Disease Society is working closely with the Royal Oldham Hospital; Ronnie Chikwama, the eye clinic liaison officer, and the Oldham Society for Blind and Partially Sighted People.
The monthly group will have regular guest speakers, social events and fundraising activities.
The first meeting takes place on Wednesday, 1-3pm at the Link Centre, 140 Union Street, Oldham.
