Switch-on pulls the biggest crowd

FESTIVE cheer was alive and well on the streets of Chadderton despite the absence of a famous face.
Families united to explore a treasure trove of Christmas markets and witness the big switch-on.
But there was a tinge of disappointment as guest of honour, former Manchester United ace Paul Scholes, failed to attend having been double booked.
Despite this, organisers say the switch-on pulled the biggest crowd ever.
Youngsters Max Butterworth and Jade Chadwick, the prince and princess of Chadderton, did the honours with a little help from mascot Chaddy the Griffin.
Organiser Mike Lawson said: “We had the biggest ever turnout and the fireworks were spectacular.
“The event is an important part of bringing Chadderton together, I really think we’re witnessing a rebirth of the community.”
Revellers glided around on an ice rink while pupils from local primary and secondary schools sang carols.
Shoppers got their festive fix, stocking up with everything from luxury cheeses to Christmas gifts and cards.
