Rubbish war of words

OLDHAM Council’s Lib-Dem leader Howard Sykes has slammed the state of Kershaw Street car park following the closure of Beal Hey tip in Shaw.
He says the recycling bins are used much more heavily now and as a result the surrounding area has become a dumping ground.
But Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority says there has been no increase in fly-tipping since the recycling centre shut its doors.
“This is clearly material that used to go to Beal Hey and the Waste Disposal Authority,” Councillor Sykes said.
“Now Oldham Council and council tax payers have to foot the bill and sort out the mess.
“I hate to say ‘I told you so’ but this is just one of a number of parts of Shaw and Crompton that are now littered — they were not when the tip was open.”
A Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority spokesman said: “GMWDA is working with Oldham Council to regularly monitor fly-tipping in the area. “There has been no increase in the tonnage of fly-tipping material delivered to GMWDA since the closure in September.
“Therefore, there is no direct evidence to support that the fly-tipping at this recycling site is a result of the closure of Beal Hey.”
