Chinese year of opportunity

A STUDENT who swapped Oldham for China is urging others to follow in his footsteps.

Mofozzul Choudhury Imran beat off competition from 2,000 others to win a place on the Government-funded Study China Programme.

The 27-year-old, who is studying business administration management at University Campus Oldham (UCO), spent a month in the country over Easter.

The 17-day programme immersed students in cultural and social activities, including language lessons, in world’s fastest growing economy.

Mofozzul, of Colwyn Street, Coldhurst, was based at Nanjing University and also spent extra time in China, sightseeing in Beijing and Shanghai.

He has talked to UCO students about his experience and said: “I want UCO students to know more about this programme. I want to encourage them to apply and get more people from UCO to be successful.

“I gave a couple of presentations sharing my experiences and giving them advice and tips.

If any other educational institutions want me to give a presentation I would happily do that.”

Mofozzul was the first student from Huddersfield University, of which UCO is a part, to gain a place on the programme. It is administered by Manchester University’s Centre for Chinese Studies and the Confucius Institute and is open to undergraduates, which includes university and college students.

Normally hosted by a Chinese university, the costs of the programme once the students arrive are covered by Government sponsors. Participants have to pay for their own flights, visa, travel insurance, vaccinations and food.

Mofozzul, the former Student Union chairman at UCO, received a grant from Huddersfield University, but this may not be available to all students.

The closing date for next Easter’s programme is January 3, but references must be submitted by December 21.
