AWAKE: Adam McQuillan has opened his eyes for the first time in 10 weeks
Family’s joy as Adam wakes from 10-week coma
PRAYERS have been answered for a family of an eight-year-old boy, who has woken from a 10-week coma.
It was the day mum Anita McQuillan has yearned for — ever since her son Adam suffered serious head injuries in a car accident on September 17. Now Adam, a bubbly and athletic youngster, has opened his eyes and regained slight movements in his legs — enough to kick a football.
“He’s a little miracle,” beamed a proud Anita (30), of Coverham Avenue, Alt.
“I can’t describe how I felt when he opened his eyes. We thought we had lost him but now we’ve got him back.”
Doctors had prepared the family for the worst as Adam lay in hospital following the car accident in Abbeyhills Road, Alt.
He had been rushed to the Royal Oldham Hospital with a potentially fatal skull fracture, before being transferred to the Manchester Children’s Hospital. Despite also caring for her 10-month old daughter, Anita spent every waking moment by his side, wishing him to open his eyes in time for Christmas.
Adam can now make small movements in his arms, hands and legs, but cannot yet speak.
A long journey lies ahead for the Delph Primary School pupil, who is set to remain in hospital for weeks, and could take more than two years to recover..
Anita said: “We’ve been taking him around the grounds in a wheelchair, letting him have a look around and take in the sights and sounds.
“We’ve put a football in front of his left leg, his strongest leg, and he has managed to kick it.
“He can’t communicate just yet, the next thing is for him to learn to focus his eyes on us.
“Nobody can say the extent of his brain injury, we’re just ecstatic to have him with us no matter how long the road of recovery will be. His progress is so gradual but we’re hanging in there. When he finally comes home we want to stage a day to celebrate Hallowe’en, Christmas — everything he will have missed.”
Adam’s family and friends have since raised more than £3,500 for an MRI scanner appeal at the hospital. The figure was boosted by a £1,866 doonation from Broadway Celtic FC, the football team in which Adam is a star player.
Players, officials, family and friends of the club staged raffles and auctions to raise the money.
Adam’s family have been stunned at the reaction from the community. Anita added: “It’s been so inspirational to know so many people out there care not just for Adam but for other children too.”
