David Hayes and Rory the Roughyed switch on Failsworth’s Christmas lights
THE force was definitely with MP David Heyes... who used a Star Wars-style lightsaber to officially switch-on Failsworth’s Christmas lights.
Around 200 locals enjoyed the seasonal celebrations at Failsworth Pole, which included carols by Failsworth Community Band and singing sensation Georgia Povey.
Oldham rugby mascot Roary the Roughyed joined in the fun as did members of Failsworth Carnival’s royal family.
Hollinwood residents can attend the Hollinwood Christmas lights switch-on tonight at the former Roxy cinema site from 6.30pm with the light-up happening at 7pm.
MEANWHILE, hardy Heysiders braved the bad weather to enjoy their local Christmas festival. Locals enjoyed the Christmas tree lights switch-on, a puppet show and carol singing — as well as a browse around Sweet Inspirations sweet stall at Bullcote Park.
The second annual event, held by Heyside Neighbourhood Council, was hailed a success.
Organiser Neil Williams said: “It was a great day — but we did have hail, rain and all sorts. People in Heyside seem to support these events whatever the weather!”
