YOUNG apprentices gather at the St Mary’s development with site managers
Apprentices to work on two major schemes
YOUNG people in Oldham are on the right track after hearing the famous phrase “You’re hired!”
Two schemes have taken on new apprentices. Symphony Housing and Bramall Construction, currently working on the £15 million scheme to redevelop St Mary’s, have just taken on four apprentices — taking the site total to nine.
Jack Chadwick (18) and Andrew Chappell (18) have been hired to work as apprentice joiners to help build 93 energy-efficient homes. They will join apprentice plumber Shaun Cadwallader (17) and apprentice bricklayer Craig Kemp (20). All four attend Oldham College once a week to gain NVQ qualifications.
Bramall’s site manager Anthony Kavanagh said: “The four apprentices have made a great impression so far, they’re really hard working and are willing to get stuck into their work, which is refreshing.”
Meanwhile, two successful 19-year-olds from West Gorton were toasting bagging their apprenticeships thanks to Oldham-based property maintenance company City Response Ltd.
Zak Steedman and Joshua Stone were two of 10 apprentices recruited by the local specialists. They are working on a £4 million housing improvement programme to bring 144 former council homes up to scratch.
Zak said: “I’d worked in a factory and hated being cooped up all day. Despite getting my City & Guilds in electrical technical installation, I wasn’t getting anywhere when I applied for jobs in the field.
“Now I’m really enjoying the electrical apprenticeship, I love being out and about, meeting different people. My parents always said get a trade, and this is definitely the right thing for me.”
