Another man held after fresh evidence comes to light
AN OLDHAMER accused of murdering a homeless man has been released after spending three months in custody.
Darren McCann (37), of no fixed address, was accused of killing Matthew Alexander Barrett (38), whose body was discovered in a derelict warehouse in Partington Street, Mumps, in August. The warehouse is next to Oldham’s Wallshaw Street bus depot at Mumps.
Mr McCann appeared twice before Manchester crown court and was set to face trial in February. But new evidence has come to light and he has been released without charge.
Police have arrested another man, who has since been released on bail.
A Home Office post-mortem examination found that Mr Barrett, who is believed to have been living rough in the area and sleeping in the warehouse, had died from multiple injuries. beleieved to be to his chest and head. Police will not speculate over the possible use of a weapon.
