DEFIANT: Kelly Burgess and Scott Burgess were among the traders who battled on despite the bad weather
A GROUP of hardy Royton market traders defiantly beat the gales yesterday after the council decided it was too windy to set up the stalls.
Every Thursday the market attracts hundreds of bargain-hunters from all over the borough.
But by 9am yesterday there were still no signs of any tables — which are normally set up early in the morning.
Oldham Council said it made the decision not to put stalls out due to very strong winds.
One trader said that she had seen the stalls up in much worse weather.
Alan Mellor, who shops at the market every week, said he thought it was “breezy” but not bad enough to cancel the market at such short notice.
He said: “Where the market is, is quite sheltered. There were shoppers around and they were all moaning about it.”
A council spokesman said that when the decision to cancel was made the winds were very strong. A market officer went to the site to speak to traders individually.
