Union Street work brings trams closer

THE next stage of the huge project to bring trams along Union Street starts on Monday.

Part of the major route through Oldham town centre, between Greaves Street and Clegg Street, will be closed for up to four weeks as work continues to divert underground utilities away from the route of the prospective Metrolink line.

It will allow new waste-water shafts to be constructed in readiness for the arrival of the trams.

Pedestrian routes will remain open and traffic diversion routes, following Greaves Street, Ashworth Street and Clegg Street, will be clearly signposted. Information on bus-service diversions will be posted at bus stops and available online at www.tfgm.com. The work follows on from similar large-scale utility diversions carried out along King Street and Union Street West before the Christmas period.

Diverting utilities away from the route of the town’s new tram line ensures that, once Metrolink is up and running in 2014, services will not have to be suspended to allow maintenance or repair work to underground cables and pipes.
