FULLTIME SCORE
LIVERPOOL 5, LATICS1
9.55pm
FULL TIME - Latics can be thoroughly proud of their never-say-die performance here tonight. The scoreline doesn't even begin to tell the story. The Athletic players, to a man, walk over and salute their supporters, who won their own match tonight as they drowned out the home faithful for the majority of the game.
9.54pm *** GOAL ALERT***
Goal - 5-1 is a harsh scoreline on Latics but that is what the scoreboard says. Gerrard cuts in from the left and shoots at Cisak, but Downing pounces on the rebound to score his first goal for the club.
9.53pm
... still time for Carroll to revert back to recent form and head an easy chance over from six yards following Downing's pinpoint cross from the right.
9.48pm ***goal alert***
A FOURTH goal for Liverpool as the ball runs kindly to Carroll, who blasts an unstoppable left-footed shot past Cisak barely a minute after entering the fray.
9.47pm
Andy Carroll replaces Kuyt before the corner, which is whipped in by Morais but cleared to safety by Spearing.
9.46pm Liverpool in control as Kuyt fires into the side netting from 30 yards. Latics have a corner with four minutes left though . .
9.43pm
Adeyemi is booked for a late challenge on Flanagan halfway inside the Latics half.
9.42
Time is running out for Latics, who might have to start throwing caution to the wind to get extra men forward. Seven minutes remaining.
9.38pm
Something clearly upsets Adeyemi as he retrieves the dead ball from in front of the Kop. Furman and Diamond have to pull a furious Adeyemi to one side and calm him down - maybe something was said by a fan.
9.38pm
Twelve minutes left on the clock. It's an uphill struggle for Latics but their heads have certainly not dropped.
9.36pm
Smith wastes no time in making himself known, throwing himself firmly but fairly at Reina and only narrowly failing to connect with Furman's long-range free-kick. Taylor picks up the pieces and heads towards the box before shooting straight at the Spaniard.
9.34pm
Liverpool take off Bellamy, who has been a thorn in Athletic's side all night, and introduce England winger Stewart Downing.
9.33pm
Goal hero Simpson makes way for Smith, while Morais replaces Wesolowski.
9.32pm
Here come the cavalry - Filipe Morais and Matt Smith are preparing to come on for Latics as Dickov rolls the dice...
9.30pm Substitution for Liverpool - John Flanagan replaces Aurelio.
9.28pm +++GOAL+++
It's a long, long way back for Latics now as Shelvey puts Liverpool 3-1 in front, poking home Bellamy's low cross. It's harsh on the away side, who had a firm foothold in proceedings.
9.26pm
In the build-up to this tie Furman and Wesolowski told the Chronicle how keen they were to battle it out with Premier League opponents. They have gone toe-to-toe with Gerrard and Spearing tonight - two top-flight regulars - and have not looked out of place.
9.21pm
... and they nearly had something to cheer about as Parker's pass across the box finds Adeyemi - but the Norwich loanee's powerful effort goes high and wide.
9.20pm
Quick note about the Latics fans - their side may be losing but they are having a cracking night, as banter with the Liverpool supporters flies back and forth. "Oldham till I die" is all that can be heard in this famous old ground right now.
9.16pm Close call. Gerrard's corner finds Kelly, whose downward header is palmed onto the post by Cisak.
9.13pm
Furman fires up the troops, spurred on by an aimless pass from Coates which goes straight out for a throw-in. This is far from over.
Meanwhile, the first substitution of the night sees Josh Parker replace Scapuzzi on the left flank
9.09pm
Operation 'Blue Balloons' is still alive and kicking- Kelly is stopped in his tracks by one as he scampers down the right flank, much to the delight of the Athletic fans!
9.06pm
Action-packed start to the half. First, Mvoto heads just wide after another Simpson special - these free-kicks are consistently finding their target - and seconds later Bellamy's squared ball to Kuyt in the box is bundled behind by Mvoto for a corner, which comes to nothing.
9.05pm
Back under way here at a slightly nippy Anfield. Where's my snood when I need it?
In the next 45 minutes every Latics player has the chance to make a name for themselves.
