Signs generate more concern

AN application for eight controversial signs to go back up at Royton’s Cash Generator store has been recommended for refusal.

In October, 2011, the company, based at the former Barclays Bank building in Rochdale Road, was ordered to take down signs in the old window spaces on the outside of the historic building.

The signs, the largest measuring 10ft long, had caused uproar in the community, with residents branding them ugly, garish and excessive. However, planning permission was granted for two illuminated fascia signs and one internally illuminated sign.

Now the firm has applied for retrospective consent for the eight non-illuminated signs to go back up inside the window openings.

A total of 31 objections have been received by Oldham planning department.

Concerns include the signs being unsightly and not in keeping with the historic building or surrounding area, having a detrimental impact on the reputation of the area and being a distraction to drivers.

Officers have recommended refusing the application because the signs’ position, size and design has a visually dominant, incongruous and intrusive effect which results in an excessive level of advertising on the premises.

The report stated the signs detracted from the essential character and appearance of the building, which although not listed or within a conservation area, has architectural interest.

Royton North Councillor Bernard Judge requested that the application be determined at tomorrow’s planning committee meeting.
